Wellness Wednesday: In 2014 an infrared sauna became my "go to"...

9 years ago, our new home came with, of all things, a treadmill AND a Sunlighted Infrared 2 Person Sauna. For a wellness professional, it was a dream come true. A new Life Fitness Tread AND A SAUNA? Having used sauna’s several times a week most of my adult life, this was akin to walking into a Colombian field of coffee beans. Mecca. So, having an autoimmune disease for years, I always wondered if the effects I felt afterward were psychosomatic or legit benefits of light therapy. First, what is Light Therapy? Light therapy (for sauna via spas/skin treatments) is artifical light designed to treat various medical disorders, SAD, skin wound infections etc. However, for my specific condition, light therapy is contraindicated, but so far but I monitor my numbers and they have actually improved, so in my opinion light therapy can actually work.

Please note, some declare this causes premature aging, those with skin cancer should avoid among some other diseases, so as always, this isn’t for everyone and you should check with your doctor.

Infrared Sauna Truths

What is Light Therapy (Directly from Sunlighten Website)

Detoxification

Sweat better. It’s one of the body’s safest and most natural ways to heal and maintain good health. Sunlighten’s high-quality infrared promotes effortless, deep, productive sweat.

Immunity

Stay healthy. The natural preventive properties of Sunlighten’s patented heating technology helps your cell health and overall immunity.

Heart Health

Strengthen your heart. Infrared therapy acts like a passive cardio workout, which helps your heart by improving circulation and even helping to reducing blood pressure.

Weight Loss

Increase metabolism. Burn calories. Far infrared wavelengths in all Sunlighten saunas create a passive workout, stimulating sluggish metabolism and improving fat burning.

Infrared is part of a natural spectrum.

Visible light and infrared are part of the electromagnetic spectrum, a continuum of light waves organized by how they interact with matter. Scientists explain infrared is a safe, gentle form that brings many good, healthy things to earth and human beings. The energy it delivers is just the right nudge cells need to stimulate warmth, growth and release. 1, 2, 3

Infrared comes in 3 distinct types.

Because it’s on a spectrum, infrared has a range of waves in its own category. There are 3 types based on wave size, frequency, and the amount of energy they carry: near (NIR), mid (MIR) and far (FIR). Though tiny pinpoint-size waves, each infrared ray does something beautifully unique for our bodies, and nature. Memory tip: each one is named for how close it is to visible light.

So how does one feel after using the Sunlighten Sauna? I can only speak to how it makes me feel personally: I am more relaxed, my muscles are not as sore (it could be b/c I stretch in the sauna also), I believe that via sweat I am eliminating toxins. What I don’t feel: I don’t feel a cardio benefit. They speak about a passive heart benefit. I believe maybe indirectly it improves circulation thus the assumption is that it benefits, but you won’t feel like you’ve just run 3 miles. It’s a secondary response, only IMO!!! I’m not a doctor, this is only my opinion.

Trivia Thursday

Sometimes I love random subjects. Trivia Thursday is the perfect day for this article. You are welcome…

Have you ever been outside and a fly landed on your food? Or maybe you were eating inside and a pesky fruit fly invaded your plate. Can you still eat the food?
